it hostfest time!! for those of you who dont know, it is a giant scandinavian festival that takes place once a year in minot (full of old people). stevie and i used to work there every year and we would sell dried fish and pickeld herring to these old farmers, and usually we would carry the Icelandic flag in one of the flag ceremonies. Host means fall and hosta means cough, and most people in minot say "hostafest" which really means "coughing festival" i doubt anyone but me thinks thats funny.. but really, i saw engelbert humperdink there, and the grandpa from the cosby show (he was born in norway)..
Posted by larry at October 9, 2003 09:28 AMI am glad to see that the archetype for all festivals gets some ink on your website. Without Chet Reiten and the Hostfest, one could argue that other festivals, i.e. Lollapoolza, Ozz Fest, the new festival sponsored by CMT, would never have been established. Sometimes we need to sit back and be proud of where we come from. What I wouldn't do for a shot of Sno Shoe Grog and a slab of herring right now. Remember the time we shaved my head at Greg's place before the flag ceremony. Karen was pissed...there is a great Karen story under "What the f***"
Posted by: hicountry on October 9, 2003 09:38 AMi accidentally saw liza minelli there when i was gripping for braniff. wait, that sounds dirty.
Posted by: scott on October 9, 2003 09:41 AMSteven, i still laugh
every time i think about how pissed
your family was during the shaved
head ceremony.
I saw Neil Sedaka and Tim Conway
at the høstfest. And i ate a "viking on a
stick" which is a meatball the size of your
fist......on a stick. gross.
Viva cheese curds!!!!!!!
i haven't been since i was a small child and every year when my parents tell me that they are volunteering there, i get depressed that i won't be there to watch them scoop out roummegraat (like i'm supposed to know how to spell that?) to the old folks.
Posted by: anthony on October 9, 2003 11:10 AMha, i remember how mad mom was when stevie shaved his head!! i remember going there and if youre not really old or a little kid, people think that you are from norway, it happened to me the last few times i was there with my mom, she would stop and talk to someone, and i would stand there not saying anything, then later people would ask her who that norwegian guy was.. ha. steveb remeber that smoked fish those old dudes would buy?? like 20 peices of it??
Posted by: larry on October 9, 2003 02:03 PMha, i also remember ordering a "norwegian" beer at one of the little resturants there. i got it and enjoyed a red hook. whats funny is that red hook is brewed in washington state. whats even funnier is how much norwegian beer suks. i have only had a few kinds, aas and egjyls bra, but man, they were horrible..
Posted by: larry on October 9, 2003 02:10 PMOh my God! I had forgotten all about those old guys lapping that dried herring up. They would each buy like 20 a piece. I also laugh because people would drink like 20 cups of coffee a day. I have not witnessed people drinking coffee on 80 degree days since I left the homeland. I have also been thinking about Terry Fix's(HCS employee) stories about the old fall festival. He said it was his least favorite of all the fairgrounds activies. A direct quote, "a lot of those old f***ers have a difficult time making it to the can - if you know what I mean."
